ASTORIA — The owners of organic chain Bareburger is switching it up with the opening of a new Southern-style biscuits and fried chicken joint next month.
The company will launch Burnside Biscuits in the former Athens Cafe space at 32-07 30th Ave., offering a "northern twist on a southern specialty." The menu includes biscuit sandwiches, fried chicken and wood-fired vegetables, according to general manager Tommy Sardo.
"Our vision is a buzzing patio and a porch-style waiting area where guests can start their night, end their night, or make it their whole night," Sardo said in a statement. "We want to take the old Athens Cafe block and turn it into our own Burnside Biscuits Block Party."
The eatery, which is expected to open in mid-to-late June, is named after a Civil War general, the owners said. Its opening was first reported by neighborhood blog We Heart Astoria.
Like Bareburger — which started in Astoria and now has locations in several cities — Burnside Biscuits will use many sustainable and organic ingredients, the company said. Local beer and wine will be offered on tap.
