ASTORIA — The owners of the organic burger chain Bareburger have plans for the former Athens Cafe space, saying they want to bring an "exciting new concept" to the prominent 30th Avenue location.

Neighborhood blog We Heart Astoria first reported the news, following the closure of Athens Cafe earlier this month.

"The Athens cafe location has been an iconic part of the Astoria community for years," Bareburger said in a statement. "Bareburger Group saw an opportunity to inject some new life and an exciting new concept into a space abound with possibilities."

The company would not elaborate on its plans for the site.

Bareburger, which has locations in Manhattan, Brooklyn and Queens as well as in several other states, got its start in Astoria in 2009 when owner Euripides Pelekanos opened the original restaurant at 33-21 31st Ave.

Athens Cafe had been in the neighborhood for years, located at 32-07 30th Ave. on a busy corner intersected by Newtown Avenue. It was known for its Greek fare and prime sidewalk seating.
