INWOOD — Nearly a year after it opened, Inwood’s prefab apartment building The Stack has found a tenant for its ground-floor retail space.

Probus NYC, a store that sells high-end streetwear for men, will move to the 4857 Broadway building this June, said store manager Rey Cordova.

The shop, which was looking for a larger space, will benefit from 2,000 square feet at The Stack compared to just 1,150 square feet at its current 181st Street location, where it has been since 2000, he explained.

“181st Street is changing. The rents are going up,” said Cordova, who has managed the store for 12 years. “There are probably six stores that are closed just between Broadway and Fort Washington Ave right now.”

Ricky’s had a Halloween pop-up shop in The Stack space, near Academy Street, in October 2014, but the retailer opted not to open a permanent store at the location.

Probus is known for its high-end casual wear for men, including jeans from Diesel, sunglasses from Dita and sneakers and accessories from Y-3. In addition to local customers, Probus caters to clients from around the world through their website.

“We’re looking to expand on some of the brands that we have and to carry more of a variety,” Cordova said of the new store.

He described the typical Probus customer as young and fashion conscious.

“It’s the person who is going out clubbing, but who doesn’t want to look like the typical guy in the neighborhood. He’s brand-savvy,” Cordova said. “A lot of these guys want to come in and get styled, see what’s new for each brand.”

Cordova said that moving to Inwood would also offer the store more exposure because the new shop will be closer to the nightlife scene on Dyckman Street.

“It’s a location that is kind of bubbling in the summer,” Cordova said. “With the bars and everything like that, it’s sort of speaking to our target customer — a younger, hipper guy.”

Probus will be the first permanent client in the retail space at The Stack, which houses 28 luxury apartments with features such as a virtual doorman and a shared terrace.

The space Probus will rent represents about half the total retail space on the ground floor, a broker for the property said.

One of the city’s first modular buildings, The Stack was built in Pennsylvania and then assembled at the lot near Academy Street. It opened to tenants in June 2014.

Cordova noted the unusual and modern look of the building was a selling point for Probus.

“It fits with the guys who shop at our store,” he said. “They’re into art, music, fashion. This will give us that feeling when they come into the store, that allure.”
