CORONA — A local official is raising money to help the children of the pregnant mom who was gunned down in her apartment hallway in LeFrak City the day before Thanksgiving.
Councilwoman Julissa Ferreras hopes to raise $20,000 for Brandee-Anastasia Massey's four kids, who range in age from 4 to 9, for future education costs.
Massey, 27 — who was seven months pregnant — was returning home Nov. 26 at 8:30 a.m. after dropping the children off at school across the highway from their large apartment complex, police said, when she was shot twice by a suspect who waited for her by her 15th-floor apartment.
Her baby was delivered by doctors at Elmhurst Hospital but later died, officials said.
"These innocent children have suffered the greatest loss," Ferreras said.
The police are eyeing her ex-con uncle as a possible suspect because Massey had information about a domestic violence case involving him, sources said.
A $6,000 reward for information related to the arrest of the suspect is currently being offered, with $2,000 donated by state Sen. Jose Peralta and another $2,000 given by LeFrak City's management company.
Every dollar donated to the fundraiser, which is hosted through Rally.org, will go to the Massey children, Ferreras said.
"As a community, we can give these children a fighting chance at a better future," she said.
