BROOKLYN — A man who jumped into the back of an unmarked police car and scuffled with a sergeant before grabbing her gun was shot Sunday, police said.

Maylouby Jean, 25, got into the rear passenger seat of the idling car that had stopped at a traffic light on Avenue D at Nostrand Avenue, in Flatbush, about 12:45 a.m., NYPD officials said.

A sergeant who was sitting in the front passenger seat beside a plainclothes officer pulled her gun on Jean but he started struggling with her, police said.

The gun went off but didn't hit anyone, and then Jean wrested it from the sergeant and jumped out of the car, the NYPD said.

Three uniformed officers who had been posted at nearby locations confronted Jean and demanded that he drop the weapon, police said.

Jean fired on them instead, missing all the officers, police said. Two of the responding officers shot their guns along with the plainclothes officer who had been inside the car with the sergeant, police said.

Jean was hit in his torso and lower leg and taken to Kings County Hospital, where he was listed in critical condition, NYPD officials said.

He was awaiting arraignment on charges of attempted murder, criminal possession of a weapon, criminal possession of a firearm and criminal possession of stolen property, officials said.

The sergeant, the plainclothes officer who had been in the car with her and two of the responding officers who fired their guns were all treated for tinnitus at Methodist Hospital, the NYPD said.
