RED HOOK — A group of local residents is marking the second anniversary of Hurricane Sandy with a job fair in hopes of commemorating the storm “with a step forward.”

The event will be hosted on Oct. 29 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. with more than a dozen participating local and city agencies at 763 Hicks St.

Agencies and companies that will take part in the event include the Department of Small Business Services' Workforce1 program, the Department of Environmental Protection, NYPD, IKEA Brooklyn, the Red Hook Community Justice Center and South Brooklyn Industrial Development Corporation.

Red Hook Local Leaders, a group of 70 residents organizing the job fair, went through a three-month training program at the nonprofit Red Hook Initiative to learn about strengthening community resiliency in the neighborhood.

The program, which took place from July to September, also discussed individual and family preparedness in the case of disasters and emergency situations, according to Catherine McBride, a program coordinator at the nonprofit.

This will be Local Leaders’ first event as an independent group, McBride said.

The event, which will offer job training and hiring opportunities for locals in search of work, will be hosted in partnership with the NYCHA Office of Resident Economic Empowerment and Sustainability and the city’s Office of House Recovery, both of which will also participate in the fair.

Organizers have also received support from Councilman Carlos Menchaca and the Red Hook Initiative, which is offering its new Hicks Street space for the event.
