NEW YORK CITY — The 5-year-old Bronx boy tested for Ebola at Bellevue Hospital on Monday has been moved out of isolation after being "fully cleared" of the deadly virus, health officials said on Tuesday.

The boy, who recently returned home to the Bronx from Guinea with his family, was rushed to Bellevue after he developed fever.

Doctors determined he is suffering from a respiratory illness, which can also cause the fever, health officials said.

The patient had already tested negative for Ebola on Monday but health workers had decided to conduct a second test "out of abundance of caution," the city Department of Health said.

The child remains hospitalized while being treated for the respiratory illness.

Dr. Craig Spencer, the only confirmed case of Ebola in New York, remains in serious but stable condition, health officials said.
