QUEENS — A man suffering a heart attack Thursday afternoon aboard a barge floating off the Queens coast was saved thanks to NYPD helicopter and harbor units.

The unidentified 47-year-old man started having chest pains at about 1:35 p.m. aboard the dredge barge Super Chief, operating about a mile and a half offshore from Breezy Point, authorities said.

A detective from the NYPD Harbor Unit, which arrived at the vessel shortly after the U.S. Coast Guard called the NYPD for assistance, helped the on-board paramedic in giving CPR to the ailing man, police said.

The NYPD’s Air-Sea Rescue Helicopter 22, piloted by Detective Erin Egan, flew in about 1:50 p.m. and lowered a basket with scuba team member Detective John Mortimer inside to rescue the man, police said.

Detectives continuously performed CPR on the man as he was hoisted into the helicopter and taken to Staten Island University Hospital South, police added.

The helicopter landed at about 2:05 p.m. and the man was released into the care of hospital doctors who confirmed that the man had regained his vital signs, the NYPD said.

He was listed in critical, but stable condition, authorities said.

Scuba team member Detective Brian Mullen, crew chief Detective Tom Diaz, and helicopter co-pilot Detective Christopher Maher also aided in the rescue, which was captured on video, according to authorities.
