ROCKAWAY POINT — A summer art show in Fort Tilden kicks off later this month with an all-day festival and a performance by local artist and punk legend Patti Smith.
"Rockaway!" connects global artists with the peninsula's longstanding artist community, with exhibits at the former military base.
The show is a collaboration between MoMA P.S 1, the Rockaway Artists Alliance, the National Parks Service and more, and kicks off June 29 with a festival that will feature a performance by Smith.
There will be food, camping and kayaking demonstrations and performances by the Rockaway Theater Company throughout the day before Smith plays live. The festivities start at noon.
The Rockaway Beach Surf Club on Beach 87th Street will host the after-party following Smith's show.
Smith, who has a house in Rockaway Beach, will also be a part of the summerlong exhibition at Fort Tilden, which will feature artwork from near and far.
The exhibit is funded in part by the Jamaica Bay-Rockaway Parks Conservancy, which was established last summer, and is presented with the Parks Department and the National Parks Service.
