QUEENS — A photographer whose body was found stuffed in a garbage bag in the Rockaways had been fatally shot in the chest before his death, the NYPD said.

Quynton Ross, 33, was found about 9:50 a.m. Monday on Beach 40th Street near the Boardwalk after he went missing the morning before, police and sources said. The city's Medical Examiner found the gunshot wound and ruled Ross' death a homicide on Wednesday, they said.

Ross, who had a 4-year-old daughter, left his home about 8 a.m. Sunday but never returned, prompting relatives to track his phone to the beach, relatives and sources said.

Relatives said they didn't call police on Sunday night because it was too dark on the beach to see, so they resumed their search in the morning, sources said. They called police after finding a bag of his bloodied clothes, sources said.

Police searched and found Ross' body, the NYPD said.

Investigators still don't know why Ross was killed, a police spokesman said.

No arrests had been made as of Wednesday morning.
