BRONX — A disabled man was killed and his mother was fighting for her life after a blaze engulfed an apartment in Allerton early Saturday morning, according to officials and news reports.

The 23-year-old man, whose identity was not immediately released, was inside 2705 Colden Ave. when a fire broke out in a fifth-floor kitchen unit just after 6 a.m., police said.

The man, who used a wheelchair, had to be removed from the blaze, according to police and NBC. His 54-year-old mother, whose name was also not released, was also removed from the building, authorities said.

Both were rushed to Jacobi Hospital Center for smoke inhalation and other injuries, cops said. The man was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital, and the woman was in critical condition, police said.

Fire crews managed to bring the fire under control by 6:45 am, a fire department offiial said.

Neighbors told the Daily News the young man was unable to to walk or to communicate verbally, and was cared for by his mother and father.
