2, 3, D and F Trains Start Running Between Manhattan and Brooklyn

NEW YORK — The subway began running between Manhattan and Brooklyn on the 2, 3, D and F lines on Sunday, officials announced.

On the D line, trains are running from 205th Street in The Bronx to Bay Parkway in Brooklyn, using the Manhattan Bridge, while the F train is running between 179th Street in Queens and Avenue X in Brooklyn, using a tunnel beneath the East River.

The 2 line is running from 241st Street in The Bronx to Flatbush Avenue in Brooklyn, and the 3 train is running from 148th Street to New Lots Avenue in Brooklyn.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority is still in the process of restoring subway service after Hurricane Sandy inundated tunnels and cut electricity at dozens of stations. While many lines will be up and running for Monday morning rush hour, officials warned that there will be large crowds and fewer trains than usual.

"It's not going to be normal tomorrow, and people should expect that," Gov. Andrew Cuomo said.

The Rockaway branch of the A train will require extensive reconstruction, Cuomo said. The MTA will transport subway cars out to the Rockaways on trucks and reassemble them so that they can begin running there, but straphangers will still have to take a shuttle bus to and from the mainland, Cuomo said.

The 1 train has been extended south to 14th Street but is not yet running farther into Lower Manhattan. The South Ferry 1 station, which was heavily flooded, has been pumped dry, and officials hope to extend the 1 train as far as Rector Street by Monday morning.

In Upper Manhattan, the storm surge flooded the Dyckman and 207th Street stations on the A line, and crews are still removing water. A train service above 168th Street likely won't be restored until next week, the MTA said.

"We are in uncharted territory in bringing the system back," MTA Chairman Joseph Lhota said. "We will do everything we can."

On Saturday, the MTA re-launched 4, 5 and 6 service between The Bronx and Brooklyn and also restored 7 train service from Main Street-Flushing to 42nd Street-Times Square. The J train is now running from Brooklyn over the Williamsburg Bridge to Essex Street.

On Sunday, the MTA also restored the Franklin Avenue Shuttle in Brooklyn and resumed Q train service between Kings Highway and Atlantic Avenue-Barclays Center.

In all, more than 80 percent of subway service has been restored, but there are still major gaps, including no G trains and limited L trains.

The MTA is updating its website as more trains come back online.
