Residents Worry Pit Bull That Attacked Bronx Woman is Still on the Loose

By Aidan Gardiner | October 3, 2012 8:57pm

BAYCHESTER — The dog that mauled a 70-year-old woman Tuesday in Baychester is still on the loose, and residents there said they are worried the dog could attack again.

"Nobody wants a crazy dog running around the neighborhood, let alone a pit bull," said Frances Hines, 86.

On Tuesday, the dog bit the 70-year-old woman's face and neck inside of 1281 E. 223rd St., near Needleham Avenue, authorities said.

The victim, whose identity has not been released, was taken to Jacobi Medical Center in serious but stable condition.

But the pit bull, which neighbors described as an adult male with gray fur, fled and hasn't been seen since.

Those who live in the area said the pit bull is one of two the victim's family owns and that the dog barks viciously at passerby.

One man who has lived in the neighborhood for a dozen years said that when he would walk his Rottweiler along the street, the pit bull would "go ballistic."

"I didn't think he was friendly at all," said the neighbor, who declined to give his name. "That's very discomforting that he's still out there."

Michael Thompson, who lives next door to where the attack occurred, said the family's two pit bulls spend much of their time in the fenced area in front of the house.

"Sometimes they're calm," Thompson said. "But sometimes they change and just start barking."

Animal Care and Control did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Wednesday.
