Barclays Center Booze Sales to End at 1 A.M.

PROSPECT HEIGHTS — In a bid to ease neighborhood fears about drunken late-night crowds spilling out of the Barclays Center, the New York State Liquor Authority on Wednesday approved a liquor license for the arena with a 1 a.m. cutoff time.

That's an hour earlier than the 2 a.m. cutoff time the arena requested when it applied for its liquor license. Neighbors worried that was too late, and mounted a campaign demanding a 10 p.m. halt to alcohol sales.

"Although we continue to believe that an earlier cutoff time is appropriate for the residential neighborhoods where Barclays Center is located, the SLA's consideration of local impacts in requiring sales to end at 1 a.m. is a positive step in the process," said Michael Cairl, President of the Park Slope Civic Council, in a statement released by Brooklyn Speaks, a coalition of neighborhood groups that advocate for residents near the Barclays Center.

The arena will be allowed to return to the SLA in the future to ask for a later end time for alcohol sales. Barclays Center representatives have pledged to run a "neighborly" facility that won't let unruly patrons wander the streets after events at the 18,000-seat arena.

Neighborhood fears were compounded when the Barclays Center announced that Jay-Z's 40/40 Club would open inside the arena, because the 40/40 Club's other locations have bottle service. The 40/40 Club at the Barclays Center won't sell booze by the bottle.

The Barclays Center is scheduled to open on Sept. 28 with a series of concerts by Jay-Z. Justin Beiber, Barbra Streisand, Journey, Neil Young and The Smashing Pumpkins are among the headliners scheduled to play at the arena, which will be the new home of the NBA's Brooklyn Nets.
