Boy Accidentally Dropped Tot from Window Trying to Impress Mom, Sources Say

THE BRONX — The young Bronx boy who accidentally dropped his 3-month-old sister from a window Tuesday evening was just trying to show his mother what a good job he was doing babysitting the infant, a law enforcement source said.

The 9-year-old boy told investigators he held his baby sister out the second-story window of the family's apartment in the Edenwald Houses about 8 p.m. Tuesday so the young girl could wave to their mother, who was sitting on the front stoop with friends, the source said.

But the boy lost his grip on his baby sister, and she tumbled toward the building's courtyard, striking an air-conditioning unit as she fell, the source said.

She was taken to Jacobi Hospital, where she was in stable condition Wednesday with a fractured skull.

The Administration for Children's Services took custody of the infant and the 9-year-old, along with their five siblings, as police questioned people who lived in the East 226th Street building, including the three people who were inside the apartment at the time of the incident.

Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said that he was "doubtful" that the 9-year-old would be charged and it was not clear if the adults who were present would face charges.

Takeya DuBose, the children's mother, was among those questioned, but police released her on Thursday without charging her, the NYPD said.

No arrests have been made.

On Wednesday, a man who identified himself as DuBose's brother but did not give his name said he'd heard his young niece would be fine.

"Yesterday was the worst day of my life," the man said.
