Vigil Planned for Slain 14-Year-Old Bronx Honors Student

BAYCHESTER — A candlelight vigil is being held Monday night for the 14-year-old Baychester honors student who was shot to death in a park after playing tennis late last week, according to the boy's family.

The vigil for Kemar Brooks will be held inside Haffen Park, where the shooting happened, at 7 p.m., the victim's father, Cassel Brooks, 50, told DNAinfo.com New York.

A funeral has been scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 12 at 9 a.m., at the Gospel Assembly Church, where Kemar went to Sunday school.

"Everybody will be there," Brooks said of the funeral.

Kemar, who was shot in the back of the head after playing tennis inside the park, near Bruner and Burke avenues, was discovered unconscious by his father about 6 a.m., the FDNY and family said.

According to police sources, Kemar and two other boys were playing tennis on Friday night when it began to rain and the three ran for cover.

While waiting out the rain, shots rang out and Kemar's two friends ran away, police sources said.

A spokeswoman from the medical examiner's office confirmed Monday that the boy died of a gunshot wound to the head.
