'Diva of the District' Mindy Meyer Spices Up Race for Brooklyn Senate Seat

By Jill Colvin | July 24, 2012 11:14am

NEW YORK CITY — Mindy Meyer isn’t just running for State Senate — she’s running to be “Diva of the District.”

Like a real-life version of the brainy bombshell Elle Woods, played by actress Reese Witherspoon in the film "Legally Blonde," the spunky 22-year-old is turning heads with perhaps the greatest campaign website of all time, splashed in hot pink and leopard print, with the LMFAO–inspired slogan, “I’M SENATOR AND I KNOW IT” flashing in blinged-out, animated diamond font.

But that's not all.

The Republican and Conservative Party candidate for State Sen. Kevin Parker’s Brooklyn seat is also Orthodox Jewish, claiming she’s “the first young woman in the history of New York to run for New York State Senate.”

While she lacks political experience, Meyer said she also has a clean slate.

"I can tell you one thing, I have no experience in corruption," Meyer writes on her site. "This is how politics has to change. There is always corruption, but I have the intention to follow my values and ensure that none of what happens in my district is corrupt."

The candidate “intends to utilize her religious values and moral compass as her guide,” she added.

While Meyer's rep said she was unavailable for comment amid a barrage of media requests, she told City & State that the concept for the website, which went viral late Monday, was “100 percent” her idea.

“I’m trying to attract a young crowd and recruit more young people," she told the publication, adding, "People in politics are out of touch with the younger generation, who are not voting, are not registered."

She said that traditional campaign websites also don't help.

“Have you been to Kevin Parker’s website? You could fall asleep when you go to it, everything’s just red, white and blue," she said.

A political science grad from Touro College and lifelong Flatbush resident, Meyer currently works for a real-estate attorney in Flatbush, while attending the Touro College Jacob D. Fuchsberg Law Center in Central Islip at night.

But comparisons to the fictional Elle Woods aren’t far off.

“To be honest with you, the reason why I initially wanted to attend law school is because I’d watched Legally Blonde and saw Elle Woods,” Meyer told the paper, citing the ambitious sorority girl as an inspiration.

“She showed me you could go to Harvard and make it sophisticated. Pink is my favorite color, so that’s technically my inspiration, everything pink,” she said.

According to her site, Meyer’s platform focuses on increasing school choice, ending stop-and-frisk, advocating for domestic violence victims and boosting jobs.

In her “Issues" section, she poses with a bow and arrow, declaring “No more ‘Hunger Games’ in our District!” while advocating for summer youth employment programs.

"By identifying existing programs and assessing our community needs," she wrote, "we will shape our own plan for a better future."

She also seems to have caught the attention of Parker, who told City & State that he is taking Meyer’s campaign seriously, despite the flash.

As for the criticism of his website, Parker said that no election is won with a website, but conceded that he might just have to match Meyer's verve.

“Anybody who knows me for a minute knows I never back down from a challenge," he said. "So apparently we’ll have to step up our website game.”
