CITY ISLAND — A fire broke out on a boat at the Morris Yacht and Beach Club on City Island on Wednesday afternoon, likely because of a lightning strike, fire officials at the scene said.

The fire broke out around 1:30 p.m., an FDNY spokesman said, and plumes of black smoke spewed out into the sky as the boat burned.

Emergency crews responded in force, with multiple trucks, as well as police and fire boats, according to witnesses at the scene.

No injuries were reported, and the fire did not spread because the boat was anchored offshore when the blaze broke out, the FDNY spokesman said.

The FDNY spokesman could not confirm the cause of the fire, but witnesses and fire officials at the scene said lightning was likely to blame.

Reached by phone, an employee at the Morris Yacht and Beach Club said she was aware of the fire but did not have any additional information.
