BRONX — An unknown substance sickened students at a Bronx middle school Thursday afternoon, forcing the school's evacuation, authorities said.

Emergency crews were called to J.H.S. 135, located at 2441 Wallace Ave., about 2:23 p.m. following complaints of students' eyes burning and coughing at the school building, the FDNY said.

It was not immediately clear how many people were affected by the substance, but the victims were being evaluated at the scene and no one had been transported to the hospital about an hour after the incident.

The building where the substance was found contains multiple schools, including Pelham Academy, Aspire Preparatory and Bronx Green Middle School.

A woman answering the phone at Bronx Green said she saw emergency crews at the location but was unaware of any issues at her school, which sits on the building's second floor.

Calls to the other schools went answered.
