Watch Mayor Michael Bloomberg's Super Bowl Ad

By Jill Colvin | February 3, 2012 1:13pm

MANHATTAN — Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Boston Mayor Thomas Menino are taking their rivalry to the airwaves in a Super Bowl ad airing Sunday, and DNAinfo got a sneak peek.

While the two mayors will be rooting for rival teams, they’re also founders and co-chairs of Mayors Against Illegal Guns, which advocates for stronger gun control policy.

Sitting on a couch, dressed in their team jerseys over shirts and ties, the two banter about whether Beantown or the Big Apple reigns supreme.

Bloomberg: “Giants!”

Menino: “Patriots!”

Bloomberg: “Eli.”

Menino: “Brady.”

Bloomberg: “We don’t agree on much.”

Menino: “For example, the Red Sox.”

Bloomberg: “Yankees!”

Menino: “Beans.”

Bloomberg: “Bagels!”

Menino: “But we both support the Second Amendment.”

Bloomberg: “And believe America must do more to keep guns out of the hands of criminals.”

The two then encourage viewers to visit the coalition’s website, mayorsagainstillegalguns.org

“It’s a patriotic thing to do,” Menino concludes.

“You can make a giant difference in our country,” adds Bloomberg, with a smirk.

The ad, which will be air on regional stations during the big game, will cost several "hundreds of thousands of dollars,” Bloomberg's spokesman Marc LaVorgna said.

The ad is being paid for by the coalition, which Bloomberg helps financial support.

“I think what it really says is, look, sports are fun. Sports are something that entertains us, but guns kill people,” Bloomberg said during an appearance on MSNBC, pointing to the shooting of police officer Kevin Brennan, who narrowly survived death Wednesday night.

The rival mayors have also agreed to a high-stakes wager on the outcome of the game, which will give a lucky New Yorker a lavish trip to Beantown if the Giants win.
