Wu-Tang Clan Producer Charged With Sex Assault to Undergo Psych Test

MANHATTAN SUPREME COURT — A Wu-Tang Clan producer charged with escaping the courthouse after his arraignment on a sexual assault charge in September was ordered to undergo a psychiatric exam on Thursday.

Manhattan Supreme Court Justice Richard Carruthers ordered the evaluation in response to Derrick Harris's wish to represent himself in court on serious charges that could land him in prison for years, rather than allow a lawyer to represent him.

"Certainly you are a very intelligent man [but] I do have some reservations about your capacity to represent yourself," Carruthers said Thursday.

"Before I can make a ruling on this I'd like to have a psychiatric evaluation," he added.

Harris, 41, who has also gone by his rap name "True Master," has launched into several lengthy rants during court appearances during which he's declared that he does not believe in the laws of the United States and that he is a member of an alternative world order.

He allegedly fled the 100 Centre Street courthouse in September after an early morning arraignment on charges he tried to rape a woman inside his West 120th Street apartment. He was rearrested hours later at his apartment.

Harris, who was ordered held without bail until the completion of the exam, opposed the ruling and noted, "I have refused numerous examinations."

He has been held at Rikers Island since his arrest and has been unable to post $250,000 bail.
