TURTLE BAY — As the UN General Assembly kicks into full swing, the NYPD will begin closing off streets to vehicle traffic and setting up security checkpoints in surrounding neighborhoods.

Beginning Sunday at 8 p.m., First Avenue in the area immediately surrounding the United Nations will be completely closed to vehicle traffic. It is not clear when it will reopen.

But other roads may be subject to closure while the international body is in session until Sept. 23.

Police said that closures could occur on roadways from 34th Street to 60th Street between First and Third avenues.

In the area between 48th and 51st streets, those closures could extend west to Madison Avenue.

On 34th, 42nd, 50th and 57th streets, blockages may reach from the FDR Drive to Seventh Avenue.

On the west side of Manhattan, police could shut down the area from 51st to 56th streets between Fifth and Seventh avenues.

Portions of Fifth and Sixth Avenues could also close between West 40th and West 42nd streets.

In addition to the roads, the waterways around the UN will also be affected in the coming weeks.

Beginning on Monday, the Coast Guard will begin periodically restricting boat traffic around the UN headquarters.

The East River will be completely closed to mariners from from 35th to 59th streets from Sept. 19 to 21, according to the Coast Guard.

The periodic road and river closures are expected to last until the end of the General Assembly session.
