MANHATTAN — As hard as it may be to believe, New York is not the most stressed-out city in the nation, or so claims a new study by the business news site Portfolio.com.

The city that never sleeps came in a respectable sixth place on the "Most Stressful Place in America" list, with downtrodden Detroit blowing away the competition at number one.

Los Angeles, Cleveland, Riverside, California, and St. Louis also edged out the Big Apple.

The ranking was based on a 10-part formula involving correlates of anxiety like the unemployment rate, percentage of deaths from circulatory system diseases and the amount of sunshine received during an average year.

The study was comparatively good news for New Yorkers whose home state came in dead last in a 2009 ordering of the nation's happiest states.
