MANHATTAN SUPREME COURT — A teen charged with setting two fires in bathroom garbage cans at Stuyvesant High School pleaded guilty on Monday to disorderly conduct but won't face jail time. He just can't go to the prestigious school anymore.
Mohammad Hassan, who was 16 when he was arrested and charged with arson and reckless endangerment, agreed to find another school for his senior year in lieu of further punishment, according to the plea deal.
School video surveillance shows Hassan hastily exiting two boys bathrooms after setting the fires on Nov. 17, 2009, according to the criminal complaint.
He was charged with arson and reckless endangerment and was facing jail time.
Hassan's alleged antics inspired a "copycat" arsonist at Stuyvesant who reportedly left "you can't catch me" notes for authorities.
In one week last year there had been nine fires at the Tribeca school. Hassan was only charged with two but suspected of others, according to reports.
The Department to Eduction did not immediately return a call for comment regarding Hassan's plea or his status as a student.
