MANHATTAN SUPREME COURT — A former top crane inspector for the Department of Buildings who pleaded guilty to taking bribes from a contractor was sentenced to two to six years in prison on Wednesday.

James Delayo, 62, took at least $10,000 from Nu-Way Cranes and its owner Michael Sakaris over a seven year period beginning in 2000, prosecutors charged.

Manhattan District Attorney Cy Vance, Jr. said Delayo's actions put the public in danger.

"This defendant was entrusted by the City of New York to ensure the safety of workers and the public, " Vance said in a statement.

Delayo put "countless lives at risk" with his irresponsibility, the DA added.
