MANHATTAN — The New York State AFL-CIO said “enough is enough” on Monday, and unleashed a massive leafleting campaign targeting two state senators they accused of having an anti-worker agenda, and highlighted their pro-charter school votes.
Constituents of Senators Jeff Kein of the Bronx and Craig Johnson of Nassau were barraged with literature at train stations and other in-district sites. The leaflets detailed the ways in which Klein and Johnson have “betrayed” New York State’s working men and women, and equated the senators’ pro-charter school votes with being anti-union.
Among the litany of charges in the flyers: “siding with big corporations and against teachers and students to pass a Charter School Bill — with no real reform.”
“They have shown a blatant disregard for the concerns of all working people,” said New York State AFL-CIO President Denis Hughes.
Monday’s action is meant to be the first strike in a larger battle between labor and Albany. In the coming days and weeks, the 2.5 million member union plans to launch similar campaigns against additional senators across the state.
