MANHATTAN — Bernie Madoff's brother, two sons and several former employees are expected to be brought up on criminal charges for their involvement in Madoff's infamous multibillion-dollar Ponzi scheme to defraud investors, the Associated Press reported.
It is likely that they will be charged with tax fraud "but may escape more serious securities fraud charges if authorities fail to come up with solid evidence they knowingly participated in the massive fraud," sources told the AP.
Madoff's brother Peter, his sons Andrew and Mark, and the unidentified employees are expected to be charged later this year, the AP added.
All three relatives were named executives in Madoff's securities firm. His wife, who had no official position within the company, will reportedly not be charged.
Madoff, the mastermind behind one of the biggest financial scams in history, is serving a 150-year sentence after pleading guilty to engineering the Ponzi scheme, which stole from thousands of investors.
