MANHATTAN — A Subway franchise owner pleaded guilty to grand larceny and welfare fraud Thursday after failing to pay more than $500,000 in sales taxes from more than 10 stores, said District Attorney Cyrus Vance, Jr.

Owner Abdul J. Mazumder, 50, will do jail time and will be forced to pay back $1.5 million in restitution, interest and penalties.

"This case illustrates how City and State revenues are lost through this type of pervasive fraud," Vance said in a press release.

The theft included $1.3 million in stolen sales tax, $59,000 in personal income tax, accrued interest and penalties and another $65,000 in stolen Medicaid benefits.

Mazumder will also be jailed on weekends for 50 weeks and pay a fine of $15,000.

"The honest New York taxpayers were thrice victimized," said Vance.
