MANHATTAN—Sex trafficking charges were part of an indictment against 14 reputed associates and members of the Gambino crime family unsealed on Tuesday.
Prosecutors allege the Gambino family recruited prostitutes from local strip clubs and drove them to clients in Manhattan, Staten Island, Brooklyn and New Jersey.
The trafficking accusation is part of a litany of charges, including extortion, gambling and drug trafficking.
U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara said at a news conference the trafficking is a “new low for the Gambino family” and “first for the mob”.
Among the 14 people named in the indictment is alleged Gambino crime boss Daniel Marino. Marino, 69, is charged in part with ordering a hit on his nephew who he suspected was speaking with the FBI.
Police are still looking for one more suspect, Steven Maiurro, 31, who is believed to be armed and dangerous and still in the New York area.
