After routing the University of Connecticut in the first round of the Big East Tournament, upstart St. John’s will take on Marquette Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Madison Square Garden.

The No. 13 Red Storm, led by junior Sean Evans’s 19 points and 10 rebounds, ripped the No. 12 Huskies, 73-51, on Tuesday afternoon.

The Johnnies (17-14) should have their hands full with No. 5 Marquette, which earned a first-bound bye in the tournament after finishing the regular season with a 20-10 record.

The winner of that game will play No. 4 Villanova, which earned a double-bye into the tournament quarterfinals, on Thursday at 2 p.m. at Madison Square Garden.

In other first-round action, No. 9 South Florida beat No. 16 DePaul, 58-49, on Tuesday, moving on to play No. 8 Georgetown at noon on Wednesday.

No. 10 Seton Hall bested No. 15 Providence, 109-106, on Tuesday for the chance to take on No. 7 Notre Dame Wednesday at 7 p.m.

Finally, No. 11 Cincinnati slipped by No. 14 Rutgers, 69-68, on Tuesday and will square off with No. 6 Louisville Wednesday at 9 p.m.

For Thursday’s quarterfinal matchups, top-seeded Syracuse awaits the winner of the South Florida-Georgetown game, while No. 2 Pittsburgh will play the winner of the Seton Hall-Notre Dame contest. West Virginia, the No. 3 seed, will face the winner of the Louisville-Cincinnati game.
