MANHATTAN CRIMINAL COURT — A sullen-looking Jayson Williams was arraigned on drunk driving charges at Bellevue hospital, where he is recovering from a broken neck days after smashing his Mercedes SUV.
Police found Williams, 41, "bleeding from his face" with "a strong odor of alcohol on his breath" after the Jan. 5 crash on Avenue C and 18th Street, it was revealed in the criminal complaint Thursday.
The former Net, who was due to be retried on a manslaughter charge next week, had shuffled from the driver's seat to the passenger's side and told police, "the driver left the scene," prosecutors said.
He had reportedly been drinking at Ace's and Eights Saloon on First Avenue before the crash.
Williams was tasered in April by the NYPD while he was intoxicated and acting violent at a Manhattan hotel, according to Assistant District Attorney William Beesch. A month earlier, he was arrested after becoming involved in a drunken bar fight.
The judge set bail at $10,000 cash over $5,000 bond for Williams and ordered him to wear an alcohol monitoring bracelet.
"We will be seeking significant jail time," Beesch told Williams and his attorney over the video conference.
Williams wore a dark suit and neck brace for his virtual court appearance. He was bandaged above his right eye and politely responded, "Yes, your honor," to the judge's instructions.
"I'm sorry for causing trouble," Williams told police in a statement made at the the hospital, which Beesch read in court.
