Sinkhole Shuts Down East 15th Street

GRAMERCY — A section of road collapsed on East 15 Street Wednesday afternoon, forcing emergency crews to close the block to traffic.

The sinkhole, between Third Avenue and Irving Place, did not cause any injuries or affect electrical service on the block, a Con Edison worker said at the scene.

A spokesman for the Office of Emergency Management (OEM) described the sunken patch of street as about 4 to 5 feet wide, noting the cause appeared to be an undermining of the roadbed.

The street was reopened to traffic at approximately 1:15 p.m. after workers cordoned off the area.

An OEM worker at the scene said the road would be repaired by Wednesday.
