The oil spill in the Kill Van Kull had no impact on Shooters Island Bird Sanctuary, officials said.
The U.S. Coast Guard said 2,900 birds are in the affected area.
A barge spilled fuel oil into the Kill Van Kull, which spread to Shooter's Island, on Friday.
The Department of Environmental Protection said that sewage has rendered waterways unsafe.
As the heat wave continues, the city's 54 pools will stay open until 8 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. Its 690 parks spray showers will stay open until 9 p.m.
The tour of hidden places includes the 9/11 Teardrop Memorial and the Kill Van Kull waterway.
