STATEN ISLAND — Bills sponsored by Rep. Daniel Donovan aimed at bolstering transit and cybersecurity defenses against terror attacks have passed their first hurdle.

The House of Representatives passed the Cyber Preparedness Act and the Transit Security Grant Program Flexibility Act Tuesday that aims to increase homeland security.

"Last weekend’s bombings in New York and New Jersey, as well as attacks on mass transit systems in Europe and the Iranian hack of a U.S. dam, remind us that oceans no longer insulate us from threats," Donovan said in a statement.

"Congress must constantly reevaluate federal policies to allow agencies and law enforcement to most effectively secure the homeland."

The Cyber Preparedness Act tries to improve sharing of cybersecurity intelligence between federal, state and local authorities, Donovan said.

The bill will now move to the Senate.
