TRAVIS — The driver who caused a fatal 10-car crash over the weekend while speeding away from the scene of a minor accident died on Thursday, police said.

Barbara Capone, 78, of Emerson Hill, died at Staten Island University Hospital days after she sparked the 10-car pileup Sunday afternoon, the NYPD said.

The crash killed a 75-year-old man and injured 12.

Capone was speeding away from a minor accident on Travis Avenue when she hit several cars waiting at the traffic light at Victory Boulevard and Travis Avenue at about 1:43 p.m., police said.

Her car went airborne, crashed down into the intersection, hitting several more cars, police said.

John Gunshefski, 75, of Bayonne, N.J., was pronounced dead on the scene. His wife, Joanne Gunshefski, 69, was also injured in the wreck, the Jersey Journal reported.

Capone was taken to Staten Island University Hospital in critical condition where she remained until she died on Thursday, police said.
