Site Where Teen and His Dog Were Stabbed Could Get More Cameras, NYPD Says

By Katie Honan | March 16, 2016 12:31pm

JACKSON HEIGHTS — The 115th Precinct plans to add more surveillance cameras and additional enforcement at a known gang corner where two people and a dog were stabbed in separate incidents Saturday.

A 16-year-old boy walking his dog at 7:30 p.m. on March 12 was stabbed on 80th Street and Northern Boulevard as men jumped out of a car to chase after another person, according to Deputy Inspector Brian Hennessy.

The teen's dog was also stabbed in the attack.

The suspects made statements about ABK, or Always Banging Kings, a gang known to hang out on that specific corner, police said.

An hour and one-half later, a 23-year-old man — who Hennessy said is part of a rival gang — was stabbed in the back, according to police.

"We are requesting surveillance cameras to put there," he said, referring to 80th Street and Northern Boulevard.

"Perpetrators don't like cameras and they don't like lights. They don't want to be under bright lights and they don't want to be on video."

Hennessey said there will also be an added uniformed police presence and undercover officers on the corner as well.

"What we do is visibility, and what we do is enforcement," he said.

He also offered perspective on the neighborhood's gang violence, which has, in years past, been much worse.

Saturday's stabbing was the third incident on that specific corner. On Feb. 1, a victim was hit with a flashlight by two suspects, Hennessey said.

But "if you go back, looking back for the year past and the year past, we've had gang shootings, gang homicides. In 2014 there were three gang-related homicides," he said.

They've boosted enforcement, arresting 446 gang members in 2015 and working with the Queens District Attorney's office to strengthen bail to keep members off the street.

There's a specific gang enforcement team in the precinct that monitors the corners and parks where various gangs hang out.

Last year, there weren't any gang-related murders, and other crime also dropped.

"It's enforcement, it's working with the community — it has helped," he said.
