Bushwick Film Festival

Where: Light Space Studios, Lot 45 and other venues across Brooklyn
When: various times

Bushwick’s annual independent film festival kicked off on Thursday and continues through the weekend with films, documentaries, workshops, panels and parties all across North Brooklyn. Check out anything from a panel on women in film and TV to a drama about a washed up Hollywood director. See the full schedule here.

“Interesting Women, Interesting Lives" Film Series

Where: Brooklyn Academy of Music, 30 Lafayette Ave., Fort Greene
When: Oct. 2 through Oct. 6

As a homage to New York women, BAM’s series screens “Working Girl” Friday at 7 p.m., “Desperately Seeking Susan" Saturday at 7 p.m. and “Auntie Mame” Sunday at 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. Tickets are $14 and available online.

“Bringing Back the City”

Where: NY Transit Museum, Boerum Place & Schermerhorn Street, Downtown Brooklyn
When: Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

A new exhibition explores the work of bus drivers, electricians, engineers and other transit workers during times of emergency, including Hurricane Sandy and 9/11. Admission costs $7 for adults, $5 for kids.

"Cheers NY"

Where: Industry City, 37th Street and 2nd Avenue in Sunset Park
When: Saturday 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. and Sunday 12 p.m. to 3 p.m.

A $50 ticket gets you unlimited food and beverage samples at this craft beer, wine and food festival emphasizing local companies.

FRIDAY, OCT. 2

Brownstone Jazzfest and Fish Fry

Where: Sankofa Aban Bed and Breakfast, 107 Macon St., Bed-Stuy
When: 9 p.m. to 12 a.m.

Listen to live jazz and hear the stories of music and community from performers inside a Bed-Stuy brownstone. Chow down during intermission at the bed and breakfast’s fish fry, and the night continues with an open mic segment. Tickets are $40.  

SATURDAY, OCT. 3

The Free Black Woman’s Library at Meat Market

Where: The Meat Market, 380 Tompkins Ave., Bed-Stuy
When: 1 p.m.

A mobile library showcasing the works of black women stops by Tompkins Avenue. Swap some books and hear readings at Bed-Stuy’s vintage clothing store The Meat Market. Attendees are encouraged to bring a book to donate or trade.

NYRP Tree Giveaway

Where: Magnolia Plaza, 686 Lafayette Ave., Bed-Stuy
When: 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.    

Spruce up your yard and take home a free tree this weekend as part of the New York Restoration Project’s annual giveaway. The event’s hosted in collaboration with Pratt Community Council, and trees are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

"Yoga + Beats + Brunch"

Where: Knitting Factory, 361 Metropolitan Ave., Williamsburg
When: 12 p.m.

Spend an afternoon doing yoga while a DJ spins indie and pop music in the Knitting Factory music venue. Bonus: you get a well-deserved cocktail after sweating it out. The $40 tickets includes brunch and two cocktails at the venue’s new restaurant, The Federal Bar.

NYC Craft Coffee Festival

Where: Villain, 50 N. Third St., Williamsburg
When: 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Java lovers can try out brews from 20 different roasters and coffee shops at this festival. Tickets are available for different sessions, and live music will be on deck the whole day.

"Songs for Unusual Creatures" at Barbes

Where: Barbes, 376 Ninth St., Park Slope
When: 4 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Join author and musician Michael Hearst and his five-piece band for a family-friendly musical tour through nature’s oddest animals. “From the Australian bilby to the deep-sea magnapinna squid, to the microscopic tardegrade, the creatures are brought to life with such odd ball instruments as theremin, claviola, daxophone, and stylophone,” according to the Barbes website.

SUNDAY, OCT. 4

The Havemeyer Sugar Sweets Festival

Where: City Reliquary, 370 Metropolitan Ave., Williamsburg
When: 11 a.m.

This bake sale fundraiser is star-studded. Popular spots like Ovenly, Dun-Well Doughnuts, Liddabit Sweets and Oslo Coffee have all donated some goods. Home bakers can also pitch in and compete to see who has the best sweet treat. Judges include experts from places like Baked, Dough and Brooklyn Kitchen. All proceeds go toward the City Reliquary, a museum in the neighborhood.
