Waku Waku +NYC, a Japanese Pop Culture Festival

Where: Williamsburg and Greenpoint; Brooklyn Expo Center, Wythe Hotel, Verboten, Transmitter Park, Brooklyn Bowl

Japan and Brooklyn unite at this Saturday and Sunday festival celebrating Japanese pop culture with panels, screenings and more on anime, manga, music, food, film and fashion. Expect cosplay, authentic Japanese food and lots of nerding out on anime. Screenwriters from Dragon Ball Z will even be around.

Friday, Aug. 28

“The Wiz” Sing- and-Dance-Along

Where: Fulton Park, Fulton Street near Stuyvesant Avenue, Bed-Stuy

Get dressed in your best Dorothy or Tin Man costume for this family-friendly sing-and-dance-along to “The Wiz.” The KIDflix Film Fest of Bed-Stuy finishes off its summer season with its annual free screening of the 1978 movie, complete with a yellow brick road. The show starts at 7 p.m.

“First Comes Love” comedy show, with special guest Ron Jeremy

Where: Knitting Factory, 361 Metropolitan Ave., Williamsburg

This Brooklyn Comedy Festival event is sure to get raunchy. Comedians will be performing their versions of anonymously solicited adult film scenes, live on stage. Bonus: famous porn star Ron Jeremy will make an appearance. Tickets cost $18 and the show begins at 11:30 p.m.

Saturday, Aug. 29

Dancewave’s Degraw Street Block Party

Where: Degraw Street between Third and Fourth avenues, Gowanus

The local dance nonprofit Dancewave will celebrate the end of summer with this free family-friendly event. Learn some dance moves, take drum lessons from School of Rock, learn to fence with Brooklyn Fencing Center, and more. The party kicks off at noon and continues through 6 p.m.

Soap Box Derby 2015

Where: 17th Street between Fifth and Sixth avenues, South Slope

Watch kids race homemade non-motorized cars down the steep hill on 17th Street. Contestants win points for speed, but a panel of judges also rates the soap box vehicles on design and engineering prowess. The eighth annual competition begins at noon.

Brooklyn Loves Michael Jackson & “Do the Right Thing Way” Block Party

Where: Stuyvesant Avenue between Lexington Avenue and Quincy Street, Bed-Stuy   

This mash-up block party from director Spike Lee celebrates the birthday of Michael Jackson and the unveiling of the street co-naming for “Do the Right Thing Way.” Partygoers can enjoy food, dancing and music as DJ Spinna plays the King of Pop’s greatest hits from noon to 6 p.m.

Free Kayaking at Brooklyn Bridge Park

Where: Pier 2 Dock, Brooklyn Bridge Park, Downtown Brooklyn

Paddle around in the East River for free from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Boats are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

S.O.S Brooklyn Play Street

Where: Kingston Avenue from Eastern Parkway to St. Johns Place, Crown Heights

The anti-violence group S.O.S. Brooklyn hosts a back-to-school street festival for kids and families featuring games, food, free giveaways and resources for neighborhood families. The event is free and open to the public from 1 to 5 p.m.

Sunday, Aug. 30

Battle of Brooklyn Commemoration

Where: Green-Wood Cemetery, 500 25th St., Greenwood Heights

Mark the 239th anniversary of the Revolutionary War’s pivotal Battle of Brooklyn with an afternoon of re-enactments at Green-Wood Cemetery. There will be a band playing colonial-era music and visitors see demonstrations of 18th century cooking. The free event starts at 12:30 p.m. and continues through 3 p.m.

First Day of Smorgasburg in Prospect Park

Where: Breeze Hill, near the Lincoln Road entrance on the east side Prospect Park, Prospect Park-Lefferts Gardens

Chow down on food and drink from 100 vendors at this outdoor food market, which will be held every Sunday on the east side of Prospect Park from Aug. 30 through Oct. 11. Smorgasburg is open 11 a.m. through 6 p.m., rain or shine.

Bed-Stuy Pride

Where: Herbert Von King Park, 670 Lafayette Ave., Bed-Stuy    

Celebrate the LGBT community in Central Brooklyn with the Audre Lorde Project’s annual “Bed-Stuy Pride” festival. The free event from noon to 6 p.m. features local artists, performances, workshops, music, vendors, and fitness activities, and looks to reinforce the theme of challenging hate.

Medicinal Plants Hike

Where: Meet at Picnic House in Prospect Park, West Drive near Third Street

Take a guided nature hike and explore plants used for medicinal purposes. Free and open to the public from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
