Man Robs $300 Bicycle at Knifepoint on Van Brunt Street, Police Say

COLUMBIA STREET WATERFRONT DISTRICT — A man had his bicycle stolen by a knife-wielding thief on Van Brunt Street earlier this week, police said.

The victim, a 41-year-old man, was walking his bike to his home Tuesday around 8 p.m. at Van Brunt and Sackett streets when a man approached him with a knife and said, "give me your bike," according to the police report.

The thief then fled toward Hamilton Avenue with the $300 Nishiki mountain bike, authorities said.

Earlier in the week, a $1,500 Raleigh mountain bicycle was stolen from the vestibule of a building on Columbia Street, a little more than a block away from the Van Brunt Street theft, police said.

The owner of the bike, a 42-year-old man, left for work at 6:20 a.m. on Sunday and saw the bicycle in the building, according to the police report. When he returned to his apartment at 2:30 a.m. on Monday, the bicycle was gone, police said.

Along with the bicycle, lights and a lock worth $100 each were taken as well.

No arrests have been made in either case.
