QUEENS — Straphangers waiting at the busiest bus stops in Queens will soon be able to know when their ride will arrive thanks to real-time countdown clocks coming to 10 locations, Borough President Melinda Katz announced.

“Countdown clocks eliminate the anxiety of waiting for the unknown, a feeling familiar to every traveler,” said Katz, who allocated $200,000 of her discretionary capital funds for the project.

“They’ll add more predictability to any commute and will be a boon for thousands of riders in a borough that boasts some of the longest commutes to and from work.”

The countdown clocks will be installed sometime in 2017, according to Katz.

The DOT, which manages bus stops and their infrastructure, said it's currently working to determine where the countdown clocks should be installed.

The agency is taking into account a variety of factors, including the number of passengers using each location, bus stops' proximity to hospitals and schools and the area's dependency on bus service, according to Katz.

The final locations will be determined in consultation with the MTA.

“Bus countdown clocks make a real difference in real time for customers,” said DOT Commissioner Polly Trottenberg.

There are currently three bus countdown clocks in the city — two were installed in 2013 in Staten Island and one was placed at the intersection of Broadway and Barclay Street in Manhattan earlier this year, according to the agency.
