WEST VILLAGE — The NYPD's 7th Precinct's Capt. Joseph Simonetti is the new commanding officer at the 6th Precinct.

The former CO, Inspector Elisa Cokkinos, retired last Wednesday, to the disappointment of women in the department and the precinct who looked up to her.

Simonetti started at the West 10th Street stationhouse, which covers the West Village, on Friday, sources said. The precinct's executive officer, Craig Edelman, had been in charge in the interim, an NYPD spokesman said.

Simonetti was appointed to lead the 7th Precinct in April of 2014, according to local blogs Bowery Boogie and the Lo-Down. He became a captain in November of 2009, according to an announcement in the captains' union newsletter.

When he started at the Lower East Side's 7th Precinct, Simonetti reportedly zeroed in on rampant thefts in the neighborhood's bars and restaurants, an issue that also plagues Greenwich Village.

The NYPD's website for the 7th Precinct already lists Capt. Steven Hellman as the commanding officer. Hellman was promoted to captain in January of 2013, according to the City Record.

He was previously the executive officer at Midtown South and the 9th Precinct.

Simonetti and Hellman did not immediately respond to phone messages asking for comment.
