Monday, Feb. 23
Beyond Fundraising Basics” is a class at the Brooklyn Brainery geared towards those who have experience working for, or serving on, the board of a nonprofit. Tackle real questions faced by professionals and, as volunteers, dive into case studies and role-play so that you walk away from class with the confidence to ask for major gifts. Iconic Sonic Youth founder and visual artist Kim Gordon has added another string to her bow: her memoir “Girl in a Band” is being published this week and she’s in town Monday and Tuesday for some speaking engagements. Monday night, she’s being interviewed by film producer Margaret Bodde at BAM Cinematek. Tickets are $40 with book; $25 ticket only, Peter Jay Sharp Building, BAM Rose Cinemas, Brooklyn. From 7:30 p.m. Tuesday night catch Gordon at Strand Books in conversation with Brooklyn-based writer and Vanity Fair contributing editor Elissa Schappell. Tuesday, Feb. 24
Benedict J. Fernandez, a Puerto Rican and Italian photographer from East Harlem, captured some of the most riveting and visceral photographic artworks of the '60s. In “The 60's: Decade of Change,” curated by the Bronx Documentary Center and presented in collaboration with the Bronx Music Heritage Center, see vintage prints and rarely seen work from the archives of Benedict J. Fernandez. Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3 to 7:30 p.m. at the BMHC Lab, 1303 Louis Niné Blvd., Claremont Village.

Wednesday, Feb. 25
For “Told It First Hand: Conversations with Hip-Hop's 'Do-ers'Brooklyn Bodega’s Wes Jackson sits down with Albert Johnson, a.k.a. Prodigy of Mobb Deep, best-selling author K’wan, and Johnny Temple of Akashic Books to talk about Hip-Hop’s next frontier: the literary world. Thursday, Feb. 26
Time is running out to sample the special brews featured at the City Bakery annual Hot Chocolate Festival, which wraps up on Saturday. While you sample Thursday's “Happy” Hot Chocolate, put pen to paper (or fingers to keyboard) and enter the cafe's Essay Contest.
