ST. GEORGE — Borough President James Oddo has allocated $380,000 to update the district attorney's nine-year-old office videotaping system.

District Attorney Dan Donovan made the request to modernize his office's system — which records footage during grand jury proceedings, trials and line-ups — because the current system installed in 2005 was nearly obsolete.

"Technology has come a long way in a few short years and it’s imperative that the District Attorney’s office utilize an up-to-date system," Oddo said.

"To see how far technology has come in such a short time, consider the difference in cell phone technology between the Nokia 1110, the best-selling cell phone of 2005, and the smartphones of today. I am happy to be able to help DA Donovan secure the tools his office needs to do their job.”

The project will update an analog-based taping system to high definition digital recordings that produce higher quality video and audio, Oddo said.

"This much-needed upgrade will bring the outdated technology in my office into the next century," Donovan said in a statement.
