OCEAN BREEZE — A man who was sent to a psychiatric center 15 years ago after trying to kill his mother went missing from it on Saturday, police said.

Vadim Babyrev, 44, got a day pass to leave the South Beach Psychiatric Center, 777 Seaview Ave., on Saturday but failed to return, police said. Babyrev was last seen at the center around 5 p.m., police said.

In 1999, Babyrev was admitted to the center after he attempted to kill his mom with an iron, according to police and NBC New York. In 2006, he attacked two guards while he was attempting to escape the psychiatric center, police said.

Babyrev is described as six-foot and weighing 205 pounds. He was last seen wearing a gray shirt with tan sneakers.

Last month, two other men went missing from the center, but a spokesman for the Office of Mental Health said that it doesn't necessarily mean an escape attempt. Officials did not say if they'd been found.

Anyone with information should contact Crime Stoppers at (800) 577-TIPS (8477).
