Five Wearable Trends from New York Fashion Week

By Serena Solomon | February 14, 2013 7:14am

LINCOLN CENTER — As Mercedes Benz Fashion Week comes to a close the trends of pony skin, fur and richly embroidered fabrics bubbled to the surface as did the drama of all things style.

Off the runway Fashion Week produced its usual portfolio of spectacles from former disgraced Christian Dior designer John Galliano going to the Oscar de la Renta show dressed like a Hasid or the weather ranging from blizzard conditions to mild and sunny days.

DNAinfo looked past the drama to identify five trends headed from runways to Fall 2013 wardrobes.

Pony Hair

Pony hair came in handy all over the runway giving outfits a glamorous, but unassuming sheen.

"It's draped, it's cut, it's narrow, it's wide," said Amy fine Collins from Vanity Fair. "Pony skin that has the texture of sued."

Victoria Beckham enlisted pony hair for dark sporty jackets, Rag & Bone used it in bright neon for footwear and Carolina Herrera designed it into  a rich burgundy ball gown skirt.

Fur

Many designers flirted with fur incorporating it collars, trim on coats, jackets and even bags.

"I could use one today," said Glamour Magazine's Lauren Bernstein of fur collars, after a Fashion Week barraged by a blizzard and some bitter cold days.

She listed off designers who had jumped on the cozy and classy trend - Badgley Mischka, Carolina Herrera and Zero + Maria Cornejo

Zero + Maria Cornejo expanded the trend to accessories with models gracing the runway with fur clutches and Alexander Wang hooked it to the current sporty craze with a fur-front hooded sweatshirt.

Burgundy

Rich and dark, burgundy made itself one of the go-to colors for Fall 2013 with numerous designers such as Tory Burch and Carolina Herrera using it as solids as well as a base for prints.

"Even on the runway, makeup as well solids and prints," said Polina Proshkina, who was walking into Wednesday's Dennis Basso show.

Both Vera Wang and Polina Proshkina sent models down the runway with matt lips in a deep burgundy.

Brocade and Jacquard

These densely decorative and woven fabric reminiscent of Czar-inspired splendor were seen in the collection of numerous designers such as Tory Burch and Vera Wang.

"Pamella Roland was a nice surprise," said Vanity Fair's Amy Fine Collins of the designer's use of brocade. "It was lovely with a Russian inspiration, but not over the top."

The designer used the fabrics in rich jewel tones such as emerald green and plum with a regal pattern woven in gold.

Wearable, Slouchy Pants

The designer Phillip Lim fused many of the runway trends — leather, slouchy pants and fur — into his show.

When asked what she would wear now, stylist Martha Graeff replied "every thing from the Phillip Lim collection."

While leather was popular on the runways and in street style last year, it remained a go-to material for many Fall 2013 collections.

Lim' s show brought a masculine and relax interpretation to the trend with slouchy pants, wrap skirts and loose fitting vests all in leather of varying colors.

Rabbit fur and knits brought a soft edge to Lim's modern biker girl look.
