CHELSEA — Fairway Markets could soon open a branch of its iconic grocery store in Chelsea, according to a report in the New York Post.
The chain is interested in taking over a location at 766 Sixth Avenue, the report said. The spot would be just steps from the always-busy Trader Joe's on Sixth Avenue, and a block away from the ever-popular Whole Foods on Seventh Avenue.
A spokeswoman for Fairway could not comment specifically on the space, adding that no contract had been signed and nothing was official yet.
The space, formerly a showroom for Gracious Home, is roughly 23,000 square feet over two floors, according to a listing.
Buildings in the area, which includes the historic Ladies' Mile, have long had issues filling up large empty retail storefronts, including a 42,000 square foot space that was home to Barnes and Noble and closed in 2008.
