MIDLAND BEACH — A 64-year-old man was found dead inside his Staten Island home after a neighbor flagged down police to request they check on the home, police said.

Police officers investigated the Mapleton Avenue home at 2:30 p.m. Friday to discover the body of a man, 64, unconscious and unresponsive, inside.

An NYPD spokeswoman said the death did not appear to be of a criminal nature, but that further investigation by the medical examiner determined that the victim's death was indeed considered a Hurricane Sandy-related fatality, adding to the city's hurricane-related death toll of 43 on Sunday.

Midland Beach was one of many neighborhoods that suffered severe damage in the storm, as well as nearby New Dorp, and Staten Island overall suffered the worst number of fatalities, totaling 23 across the borough.

The victim's name had not been released, pending family notification.
