EAST VILLAGE — Mama's Food Shop, the East Village restaurant known for its comfort food, closed on Monday because of "increasing rents and property taxes," according to owner Jeremiah Clancy.
"We have had many wonderful years and are forever grateful to all of you for eating with us and making our little place feel so special," Clancy wrote in a letter on the restaurant's website.
The eatery has been on Third Street between Avenue A and B for 15 years.
Clancy said rising rents and property taxes in the East Village were hurting many businesses in the neighborhood.
Mama's Food Shop prided itself on its home-made food made from seasonal and local ingredients, "like only Mom can," as described on their website. The menu included fried chicken, roasted pork shoulder and banana cream pie.
