WINDSOR TERRACE — Windsor Terrace is losing longtime grocery store Key Food, leaving locals with few options for full-service supermarket shopping.

The Key Food at 589 Prospect Ave. at 11th Avenue will close June 30, an employee said. The store will be replaced by a Walgreens, Patch first reported.

Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz called the closure a "terrible blow" for the neighborhood. "My office has long advocated for food justice and better access to supermarkets and fresh, nutritious foods in our most underserved neighborhoods, and this is a troubling reminder of why that fight has to continue," Markowitz said in a statement.

Markowitz added that he's contacted Key Food officials and expects them to consider opening a location nearby. Key Food recently opened a new store at 495 Fifth Ave. near 12th Street in Park Slope. Markowitz said he's also planning to speak to Walgreens officials about making fresh produce available at the new Walgreens.

Representatives for Key Food and Walgreens could not be reached immediately for comment on Monday.

City Councilman Brad Lander called Key Food closure a "sad day."

"[M]uch of the neighborhood will now be more than a mile away from the nearest grocery store," said Lander in a statement. "This will have an especially devastating impact on seniors, but the whole Windsor Terrace neighborhood will be harmed by this sale."

But Lander noted that local shoppers now have three greenmarkets to choose from — one at Bartel-Pritchard Square on Wednesdays, one at P.S. 154 on 11th Avenue on Sundays, and one outside the Windsor Terrace public library at Fort Hamilton Parkway and E. Fifth Street on Saturdays. The greenmarket outside the library is part of GrownNYC's Youthmarket program and is staffed by local high school students. It opened in 2011.

The hours and dates of operation for the three greenmarkets are:

• Bartel-Pritchard Square Greenmarket: Wednesdays, 8 a.m. - 3 p.m., May 2 - Nov. 21.

• P.S. 154: Sundays, 9 a.m. - 4 p.m., July 8 through Nov. 18.

• Windsor Terrace Public Library Youthmarket: Saturdays, 9 a.m. - 3 p.m., July 14 - October/November.
