UPPER EAST SIDE — Authorities were investigating an envelope laced with a white powdery substance at a school on East 82nd Street Tuesday morning, officials said.

Hazmat and decontamination units were probing the suspicious substance at P.S. 290 Manhattan New School at 311 East 82nd St. about 9:15 a.m., police and fire officials said.

"The envelope was found in the staff room where two employees were opening mail," said Marge Feinberg, a spokeswoman for the Department of Education.

Police said the two workers and another staffer were being isolated and possibly decontaminated.

The workers had not been transported to a hospital, and there were no apparent injuries, police said.

Feinberg said there were no students in the room. Students on the second floor were moved one floor up, she said.

The school did not have to be evacuated, Feinberg said.

Still, the scare was unsettling to parents who were dropping off their children.

"I was scared because of the ambulances and police and fire trucks," said Carla Garcia, 38, who has a kindergartner at the school.

The substance turned out to be harmless, Feinberg later said. The school resumed to normal activities, she said.
